Hardwood Plywood is defined by the types of slicing, matching, and grade of the wood product. With various methods of slicing and matching, veneers can be customized to each wood species and project, resulting in multiple exceptional options to make any project uniquely artful.

Rotary Slice:

Rotary Sliced veneer is peeled from a whole log set in a lathe and turned against a special knife, resulting in a cut that roughly parallels the growth rings to produce a bold and often striated grain pattern. Like unwinding a roll of paper, the ribbon of veneer is then cut to usable widths. Rotary Slice creates exceptionally wide sheets with distinctive grain patterns. Rotary cutting is the only method of producing veneer that creates Whole Piece Faces. This is generally the most economical way to create veneer and is the most common cut for Birch and Maple.

Whole Piece Face Matching:

Whole Piece Face (WPF) Matching is a continuous piece of veneer peeled from a log using the Rotary Slicing method. The result is a single sheet of veneer that reveals a continuous grain pattern throughout the sheet. WPF is often desired for Birch, as it displays the natural grain character of the wood species.

Why WPF Birch?

  • Light, white appearance
  • Heavy, hard and strong
  • Glues, stains and polishes well
  • Generally straight grain with a fine, uniform texture
  • Good bending properties

Hardwood Plywood products are made from beautiful hardwood, designed to showcase the stunning figure and allure of wood. Often stained or finished, these thin sheets are assembled using an engineered core—from veneer core, particleboard, to medium density fiberboard.

Product Description

HPL plywood combines the structural advantages of plywood with the durability and aesthetic appeal of HPL, making it a popular choice for a variety of demanding applications.

Construction and Properties

Core Material:

The core of HPL plywood is typically made from multiple layers of wood veneers bonded together with strong adhesives. These veneers are cross-laminated, meaning they are laid with the grain of each layer perpendicular to the previous one. This construction technique enhances the plywood’s strength, stability, and resistance to warping and splitting.

Surface Finish:

The defining characteristic of HPL plywood is its surface layer, which is made of high-pressure laminate. HPL is produced by stacking multiple layers of kraft paper impregnated with phenolic resin and a decorative paper layer impregnated with melamine resin. These layers are then fused together under high heat and pressure, creating a durable, heat-resistant, and scratch-resistant surface. The HPL layer is bonded to the plywood core using a strong adhesive, resulting in a composite material that combines the best properties of both components.

Advantages

Durability:

HPL plywood is known for its exceptional durability. The HPL surface is highly resistant to scratches, impacts, moisture, and chemicals, making it suitable for high-traffic and demanding environments.

Aesthetic Versatility:

HPL plywood is available in a wide range of colors, patterns, and textures. It can mimic the appearance of natural materials such as wood, stone, or metal, providing extensive design options for various applications. This makes it a preferred choice for interior design projects where aesthetics are important.

Heat and Fire Resistance:

The HPL surface is resistant to heat and fire, which enhances the safety of the applications it is used in. This makes HPL plywood suitable for use in kitchens, laboratories, and other areas where heat exposure is common.

Ease of Maintenance:

The smooth, non-porous surface of HPL plywood is easy to clean and maintain. It does not require any special treatments or finishes, and spills can be easily wiped off, making it a practical choice for surfaces that need to be kept hygienic.

Application

Furniture and Cabinetry:

HPL plywood is widely used in the manufacturing of furniture and cabinetry. Its durable and attractive surface makes it ideal for kitchen cabinets, countertops, office furniture, and other applications where both aesthetics and durability are important.

Interior Wall Panels:

In commercial and residential interiors, HPL plywood is used for wall panels and partitions. Its variety of finishes and resistance to wear make it a great choice for high-traffic areas such as hallways, lobbies, and retail spaces.

Laboratory and Healthcare Environments:

HPL plywood is suitable for laboratory countertops, hospital furniture, and other applications where hygiene and resistance to chemicals are crucial. The easy-to-clean surface ensures that it meets the stringent requirements of these environments.

Conclusion

HPL plywood is a versatile, durable, and aesthetically pleasing material that is suitable for a wide range of applications. Its combination of a strong plywood core and a resilient HPL surface makes it an ideal choice for furniture, cabinetry, interior wall panels, and more. By considering environmental factors and selecting responsibly sourced products, users can ensure that their choice of HPL plywood is both practical and sustainable.
